Thanks to Chuck Quackenbush and the hoard of volutneers from CBRC who helped make the race happen. The Bethlehem Cup is an infamously hard cross course. It offers little in the terms of traditional fast swoopy corners and forces riders to test their mettle in deep mud, tretcherous gravel decents, and the hardest run up I've ever come across. There are people that avoid this race and there are people who criticize it, but none of those people are made of as tough a grit as all those who tackeled the insanely hard terrain Sunday. Yes, we should probably make it more like a normal cross race, but good luck getting Chuck to agree. He's unflappably cool in tough conditions, as evidenced not only by his stellar performance at the B-Cup each year, but also by his willingness to tackle the Iron Cross each year, and will likely instruct those pleading for a detuned B-Cup to toughen up. This is cross after all.
In the elite men's race, Al Donahue (Cycle-Smart / NCC) took a comanding victory over the field with Nathaniel Ward (Bikereg.com / Joe's Garage / IF). Rounding out the podium in the elite men's field was Gavriel Epstien (Radicalvelo.com). The tight race was in the overall series points though, with Gavriel trailing series leader Mukunda Feldman (Cycle-Smart / NCC) by only five points starting the race; the overall series win was going to come down to the last day. It turns out, what was a tight race going into the B-Cup ended as an insanely tight race, with only one point seperating the two racers at the end. Mukunda managed to hold on to the series lead with 96 points to Gavriel's 95. Amazingly had either Mukunda finshed just one place back, or Gavriel one place up, the results would have flipped. That's a tight race if I've ever seen one. Jermey Gardner (HUDZ/Subaru) took the final series podium spot thanks to his consistent top placings throughout the year. All three of the riders on the NYCross podium earned their spots through hard work week after week against top notch competition. Congrtaulations to all of you.
In the women's race Anna Young (Pioneer Racing) secured the victory with Emma Bast (Cycle-Smart / NCC) in second and Bryna Nestor (Anthem Sports) breaking up a potential New England sweep of the podium by taking third. In the overall women's series Katina Walker (Velo Bella - Kona) took the overall victory in dominating fashion, outpacing the competition by twenty points. Liz Lukowski (NYCross.com / VO Max / CBRC) put an exclamation point on her break out season, securing second in the elite women's series. Kirsten Begg grabbed the third spot to round out the women's podium.
Rich Teal (NYCross.com / VO Max / CBRC) won the overall in the 3/4. Jeff Leak (WeLoveBicycles.com) took the win in the
35 plus. Jeff Walker (SCARR / Ommegang) won the 45 plus, and Dave Beals (NYCross.com /VO Max / CBRC) took home the 55 plus series title.
In the juniors, Christopher Celeicki (MVBC) took the U19 Boys, Joe Toth (CBRC) took the U15 boys, and Julia Sante took the Junior Giirls.
Cody Madigan took a one point victory over teammate Brad Young (both Team Tinney's Tavern) in the Single Speed, and Christina Perkins took home the Cat 4 Women's championship.
